HAIRLESS DOG MASTERPOST:

1. Hairless dogs are not ugly. They are different.

2. There are six different hairless dog breeds. Chinese Crested Hairless (formerly African Hairless Terrier) and Mexican Hairlesses (Xoloitzcuintle) are the most well known and popular. There is also the Peruvian Hairless (Inca Hairless), and the American Hairless Terrier. More rarely there is the Hairless Khala and the American Crested Sand Terrier. In other countries, there are believed to be small amounts of other types of hairless dogs.

3. Bad teeth are common in hairless dogs due to overbreeding and poor care / neglect.

4. Not all hairless dogs’ tongues stick out, it is usually a result of the bad teeth.

5. Hairless dogs are more common than you think.

6. They are hypoallergenic.

7. The breeds range from different shapes and sizes:

Chinese Cresteds: 10-20 lbs, differentiating amounts of hair. True hairless (completely bald), hairy hairless (different variations of the amount of hair) and a powderpuff is a non-hairless Chinese Crested

Mexican Hairless: 10-50 lbs, most are fairly hairless, all about the same color

Peruvian Hairless: 10-55 lbs, most are fairly hairless, different colors - often spotted spotted

American Hairless Terrier: 7-25 lbs, differentiating amounts of hair and colors

8. They can get sunburn. Put baby sunscreen on them if they are to be outside for a long time.

9. Most of the breeds have fairly long life spans usually with a minimum 12 years. (some even live to be 20)

10. “World’s Ugliest Dog” is the most terrible stereotype. ever.

11. Purebreeds are expensive. Rescue. If you don’t know where to rescue a hairless dog - there are rescue groups on Facebook. Bald is Beautiful is the most famous, and there is also Bare Paws and Crest Care.

12. Their skin is as sensitive as a humans can be, treat it like such.

13. No shedding.

14. Very cuddly dogs - due to not having fur. They used to be used as bed warmers years ago - they are warmer than furry dogs.

15. CLOTHES ! SWEATERS! JACKETS! (this can be a pro or con, depending on the weather where you live, and how much your dog likes clothes)

16. Chinese Cresteds can “sing”

17. They are not shaved necessarily. They do not grow hair in places.

Disclaimer: These are my three Chinese Cresteds. Two of them are rescues, and one was adopted from a breeder (but I assume he didn’t have the best conditions to live in, either). They are so lovable, smart, and silly. Most of these facts were part of research I did for a school project, some facts may be purely situational or by experience. I get asked a lot of questions about them. I don’t know if anyone will find this post interesting but here it is!
